“In this course we will analyze the performance of financial statements and determine the financial health of a company in light of its industry and peer group.”

“At the end of this course, the learner will be able to identify the appropriate type of graphic to depict the different types of content.”

“This course is a commentary on the existing laws governing copyrights. You will learn about the …. and different acts …”

“I will introduce channel management and go on to discuss selling and sales management.”

Which of these do you reckon is the correct way to address the learner in an eLearning course?

Most MOOCs find themselves at a crossroads in this regard and sometimes appear to use all of these at once! If you ask me, there’s really no right or wrong way to go about this. Having said that, addressing the learners with a ‘We’ or ‘You’ establishes a direct connection with them. A direct address is conversational and personalizes instruction, thus engaging and involving the learners.

Here’s an example from one of our recent MOOCs:

Hey everybody!

Welcome to this MOOC on MOOCs from the home of IIMBx—the digital learning initiative of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.

We are thrilled to bring this course to you. Here, you will learn about the different aspects of creating a MOOC: planning, designing, production, and delivery. Through short videos, text, and audio podcasts, you will explore the life cycle of a MOOC—from planning and production to delivery and post-course activities.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss the pedagogy of a MOOC
  • Discuss the different aspects of creating a MOOC
